Magnesium Lotion vs Magnesium Oil: What's the Difference?

Here's the first thing to know:

Magnesium oil isn't oil.

It's generally magnesium chloride dissolved in water.

We call it oil because a concentrated magnesium brine has a strangely slippery texture.

But chemically?

Mineral water.

Very salty mineral water.

What is magnesium oil?

Usually:

magnesium chloride + water.

Simple.

Concentrated.

Effective as a straightforward topical magnesium product.

You spray it onto the skin, rub it in and let it dry.

The downside is that it can leave skin feeling:

sticky

salty

tight

dry

or occasionally itchy

Especially if your skin is sensitive.

What is magnesium lotion?

Magnesium lotion takes that same basic magnesium chloride solution and incorporates it into an emulsion with fats or oils.

Now you're applying magnesium and moisturizing the skin at the same time.

I much prefer that experience.

Especially because topical magnesium is something I want to be able to use every day.

Does lotion make magnesium weaker?

Not in the way people tend to assume.

A well-formulated magnesium lotion still contains magnesium chloride.

You're simply changing the delivery format and concentration.

And personally, I'd rather have a product that I use consistently than the strongest possible magnesium spray sitting untouched in my bathroom because I hate the way it feels.

Why people like magnesium oil

Magnesium oil makes sense if you want:

  • very few ingredients
  • a spray format
  • a concentrated product
  • something easy to apply quickly
  • no added fats or waxes

It's simple.

And simple is good.

Why I prefer magnesium lotion

Skin is also an organ that needs to stay comfortable.

Magnesium salts can be drying.

So pairing magnesium with a proper moisturizer makes a lot of sense to me.

You get:

magnesium

plus fats

plus better glide

plus less residue

plus skin that still feels good afterward

That is a much more complete product for everyday use.

Which one is better for feet?

Either.

Feet are fantastic for both.

With spray:

spray β†’ rub in β†’ let dry.

With lotion:

rub in β†’ socks β†’ done.

I'm a lotion person.

Which is better for sensitive skin?

Usually lotion.

The formula is simply less aggressive than straight brine.

I'd still avoid freshly shaved or irritated skin.

Which one should you choose?

This isn't a chemistry exam.

Choose the one you'll use.

If you love the simplicity and intensity of magnesium oil, great.

If you want magnesium to double as body care, choose lotion.

The best wellness habit is usually the boring one that actually survives real life.

The one we make is our Magnesium Body Lotion.
