Tallow for Acne-Prone Skin: A More Nuanced Answer

Here are two equally unhelpful statements:

“Oil causes acne.”

and

“Tallow cures acne.”

Skincare is annoying because the interesting answers are usually in the middle.

Acne-prone skin still needs a functioning barrier

People with acne often use products that are intentionally drying or irritating:

retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, strong cleansers.

So you can simultaneously have:

breakouts + dry, irritated skin.

More oil production doesn't necessarily mean the outer skin is comfortable or well moisturized.

Where tallow may fit

If your acne-prone skin is also dry, a small amount of a tallow-based moisturizer may feel good.

Especially on dry areas.

But tallow is rich.

Some acne-prone faces will love that.

Others won't.

Don't use it as acne medicine

Tallow isn't an acne treatment.

I wouldn't swap a treatment that is working for you for a tub of fat because someone on the internet told you our ancestors never had pimples.

That's a different level of confidence than the evidence deserves.

Use skincare for the job it actually performs.

Introduce it cleanly

If you're curious:

  1. Keep the rest of your routine stable.
  2. Use a small amount.
  3. Start once daily or every other day.
  4. Watch your skin over time, not four hours.
  5. Stop if you consistently become more congested.

If you've changed five variables, you haven't run an experiment.

You've created a crime scene.

You can also use it selectively

Dry cheeks?

Use it there.

Acne-prone forehead?

You don't have to put it there.

There is no rule saying one moisturizer must cover every square centimetre of your face.

That's the useful answer.

Not “tallow is good for acne.”

Not “tallow is bad for acne.”

Your moisturizer should make your skin more comfortable without creating another problem.
